Rum is typically produced in countries where they grow sugar cane, in teh past because of the sugar industry, now often exclusively for the Rum production. In this blog we want to provide an overview of the rum characteristics of different rum-producing nations. However, it's worth noting that rum styles can vary greatly within a country, and some countries produce a wide variety of different rums
Other countries such as El Salvador, Philippines, Mauritius and South Africa and even Australia are not (yet) known as major producers of rum and less known to the broad public. These countries have small rum industry with a few distilleries producing rum using locally-sourced sugarcane. Their style is not distinct from other rum-producing nations as they do not go back such a long way, but as quality is improving they also might develop their own identity and become players to take in consideration
Again keep in mind that the characteristic attributed to the different countries are generalizations and each brand and distillery may have their own characteristics by using different distillation and aging techniques and finishing processes.
]]>English rum, also known as "Navy rum", is a type of rum traditionally produced in the Caribbean and is characterised by its powerful, full flavour and high alcohol content. The full flavour is typical of Batch distillation which releases much more aromas than the rather industrial column distillation.. English rum is made from molasses, a by-product of sugar production, and is aged for at least three years in oak barrels. The ageing process gives the rum a rich, amber colour and flavours of vanilla, caramel and oak. English rum is often drunk straight or with ice, as well as in cocktails such as the Old Fashioned and the Dark and Stormy.
Spanish style rum, also known as "ron", is a type of rum traditionally produced in Latin America and is characterised by a smooth, sweet flavour and lower alcohol content and mainly column distillation which produces a more consistent distillate rather on the light side. Spanish rum is also made from molasses, but typically matures for a shorter time in oak barrels than English rum. The maturation process gives the rum a lighter colour and flavours of tropical fruit, honey and vanilla. Spanish rum is often drunk straight or in cocktails such as the Cuba Libre and the Daiquiri.
French-style rum, also known as "rhum agricole", is a type of rum traditionally produced in the French-speaking Caribbean islands and is characterised by a grassy, earthy flavour and high alcohol content. They use the same distillation process and alambic than for Cognac production (Alambic Charentaise). A major difference from English and Spanish style is that French rum is made from fresh sugarcane juice instead of molasses. "Rhum Agricole" is aged for a minimum of three years in oak barrels made from French oak. The ageing process gives the rum a rich, amber colour and flavours of tropical fruit, vanilla and spices. French rum is often drunk straight or with ice, as well as in cocktails such as the Ti' Punch and the Zombie.
In summary, the main differences between English rum, Spanish rum and French rum are the base of the distillate, Molasses or Sugarcane juice, the type of distillation, column vs Pot distillation and their of origin.
Bij de productie van de meeste mousserende wijnen, ook de 's werelds duurste en meest prestigieuze champagnes, voegt men suiker aan toe. De dosis staat op de etiketten van de champagne, met de typische doseringstermen die het suikergehalte aangeven. Dit is zinvol om de consument te informeren over de zoetheid van de Champagne die hij verkiest. Om dezelfde reden doen we dat ook bij Alta Gama Rum en gebruiken we dezelfde terminologie als bij Champagnes, namelijk;

A year living with restrictions is a fact, resulting in no more live rum tastings, not what we had planned at Rum4Me. But we reinvented us and started with a full offering of online tasting.
What started as a trial ended up a great success and although we miss the live get-togethers, it can be fun and a good alternative to get a team together.
Recently we had two companies organising their virtual team event with a rum tasting. A selection of fine rums, closing with a special created signature cocktail concludes 2 hours of interesting and fun facts on rum, while enjoying each other company.
Our expertise with online meetings has seriously increased; using Google meet, Zoom and Teams as the main meeting platform enriched with an online polling platform, provides a nice mix of chat, video interaction and even bonding.
A great side effect, no one had to drive, so the six times 2cl of average 45% ABV of divine spirits can be enjoyed without worries. Moreover the spouses could enjoy a sip, which would never be the case if this would have been a corporate event.
No COVID hassle like keeping distance and wearing masks just a great time with friends and colleagues.
Would you like your team to have a great time out, contact us now.
